Saw Sidways on Sunday night with a friend. Awesome movie. I saw why it's considered Oscar material. Click on the link for a good review of the movie. I totally agree with the critic when he says:
"When comic action does occur, the slapstick is perfectly timed and executed. As with the best comedies of Billy Wilder or Blake Edwards, laughs derive from excruciating pain, both emotional and physical. The pain here, arising from an inability to cope with the hangover of psychological benders, is deep and absolutely refuses to go away. It's not funny at all -- only it is very, very funny."
I was so tired that night from lack of sleep from coming home late from a party Saturday night (I was dancing all night) and having to work over the weekends (I have a new part-time sales job). Plus I had to get up early on Sunday to go to mass before going to work (I was still late to mass and therefore couldn't sing in choir). But the movie Sideways, so far from being a comedy, had some really good laughs. It's already Thursday, and I still chuckle when I think about one scene in the movie. (I couldn't believe Miles did that! But, hey, what are friends for, right?)
The characters were not complex, nor was the plot. So I didn't have to think much. But I did have to feel much. Sideways was a bit artsy fartsy in that sense. Especially with the recurring references to wine which were being used as a metaphor to the personalities of the main characters. (I do appreciate Pinot Noir much more after watching this movie.)
As not funny as the movie is (you'll get what I mean after you watch it, if you watch it), there is a happy ending. And I always like happy endings, especially from a well-written, well-acted, non-Hollywood-formulaic movie. Cheers!
